The Postal Service's plans to 'study' Consolidation of Mail Processing Operations continues with 'Studies' to Consolidate Mail Cancellation Operations at four additional sites in our New England Area Local.
December 7, 2005 POSTAL SERVICE'S TRANSFORMATION PLAN MOVES AHEAD. CURRENT TARGET INCLUDES CONSOLIDATION OF MAIL PROCESSING AND CANCELLATION OPERATIONS The Postal Service has announced their intention to 'study' the feasibility of consolidating mail cancellation operations in four additional plants in the Area covered by Local 301.
The Service has notified the Union that they are, "studying" the possibility of shifting mail cancellation operations away from four additional plants within the Local 301 sphere of representation. The Service calls these, 'studies' Area Mail Processing (AMP) surveys. "AMPing" the mail means that the Service eliminates cancellation of mail and originating mail sortation out of the buildings that they are "AMPing" the mail from and combine the mail from these facilities with existing operations in other Postal Facilities. The facilities which are now under Postal review are: Burlington, VT P&DF (proposed to shift cancellation and originating sortation operations to White River Junction, VT), Cape Cod P&DF (proposed to shift cancellation and originating sortation operations to Brockton, MA P&DC), Portsmouth, NH P&DF (proposed to shift cancellation and originating sortation operations to Manchester, NH P&DC) and Springfield, MA P&DC (proposed to shift cancellation and originating sortation operations to the Hartford, CT P&DC).
The Postal Service has provided notification that these 'surveys' are simply studies and that no formal decision has been made regarding the outcome of these surveys. They have stressed to the Union that the final decision on whether to "AMP" the mail has not yet been made and they are only notifying us of their intention to study the feasibility of these studies. The last three "AMP" surveys in Local 301 all resulted in the Service determining that they would indeed eliminate cancellation and originating mail processing operations from Northwest Boston, Waterbury, CT and Bridgeport, CT effective roughly January 1, 2006 or sooner. What can you do to try to stop the Postal Service from making decisions to consolidate mail from your facility? * You can get active by attending your next scheduled Union Meeting. * You can contact your Congressional Representatives in the House and Senate and let them know what a mistake the AMPing of your mail would be. * You can contact your Locally Elected Officials (Mayors. Alderman, State Representatives) and tell them how badly you believe that service to your local community will suffer from the elimination of cancellation and sortation in your area. * You can become a member or the NPMHU Legislative Activist Network by going to our National Website: www.npmhu.org and register for email updates on important information and take action...Get Active! * You can keep checking our Local Website, our National Web Site and your Bulletin Boards for the latest updates.
