Postal Reform- After 7 years of debate, the first official vote by Congress on Postal reform was negative when the House Committee on Government Reform voted 6-20 to defeat the latest version of Postal Reform. The votes "against" mostly came from Republicans (at the behest of the Postal Service), but Democrats also voted against the Bill because of recent, not yet analyzed changes in the powers granted to the Postal Rate Commission.
Presidential Commission - Almost immediately after Postal Reform was killed in Congress, at least for this year, talk started about a Presidential Commission to study and make recommendations about the future of the Postal Service. Senator Susan Collins (Republican from Maine) has proposed a Bill to require the appointment of such a Commission, and the White House has started full-scale consideration.
