NPMHU Granted Direct AFL-CIO Affiliation Charter PDF Print E-mail
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney signed a direct affiliation Charter with the the National Postal Mail Handlers Union on December 12, 2006, reigniting a flame that was first lit between the two Unions nearly seventy years ago. PLEASE POST ON ALL UNION BOARDS
To: ALL LOCAL 301 MEMBERS

I am pleased to notify the membership that yesterday, National President John Hegarty and National Secretary Treasurer Mark Gardner announced that John Sweeney, President of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations, better known as the AFL-CIO, has welcomed the NPMHU as the first National Union to be re-issued a direct charter of affiliation after being part of an International body that had disaffiliated from the AFL-CIO.

In short, the AFL-CIO has issued a charter that provides a direct affiliation agreement between the NPMHU and the AFL-CIO, and should once and for all time put an end to the recent shameful chapter in our fellow Postal Union organizational history of relative union organizations seeking to benefit through the attempted cannibalization of our membership.

AFL-CIO President Sweeney and Executive Vice President Linda Chavez-Thompson welcomed the NPMHU back into the fold in a ceremony at AFL-CIO Headquarters yesterday (12/12/2006). The reaffiliation with the AFL-CIO became official on 12/1/06, and will allow the NPMHU to paticipate in all of the AFL-CIO's programs and activities.

Fraternally, In Solidarity,

Timothy M Dwyer, Treasurer
