Local 301 Policy Concerning Polygraph Examinations/Lie Detector Tests PDF Print E-mail
Don't Give Up Your Rights to a Bully With A Badge!

The Postal Inspection Service and their partners at the OIG are using the tactic of pressuring employees under any type of investigation into taking polygraph examinations with increasing regularity.  Local 301 strongly recommends that you don't get bullied into giving up your rights in the hopes of clearing your name by using the unreliable method of a polygraph examination or, lie detector test, in hopes of being cleared by the postal paramilitary authorities.

LIE DETECTOR/POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS

It is with the utmost concern for the welfare of all of our membership that we ask all of you to remember that in these difficult times, when we are experiencing with more regularity than ever before the involvement of both the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Inspection Service in investigations both great and small within the Postal Service, that it is a longstanding recommendation of this Office that our members do not submit to polygraph examinations or lie detector tests under any circumstances.

The reasons for our long-held position are the same ones that make test results from such examinations inadmissible in all of the courts of our country.  The results of such tests are historically unreliable, the manner in which questions are asked are routinely slanted in an effort to get the results desired by the party administering the tests and lastly, perhaps most importantly, the results of such tests are never used to clear anyone of anything that they are accused of! They are only used to besmirch the reputations of and cast negative aspersions upon those persons whom tests are administered on!

Don't be bullied or fooled into taking a lie detector test.  The biggest liars are the people administering them!
